We Remember #2 – “Outstanding Doctor”

There was a moment of pause after Megan’s story, and then the silence was broken by a young man sitting about six pews behind me in the Methodist church in Elmhurst. He wore a blue oxford cloth shirt and he had his arm around a medium length and color brunette about thirty years old. He went on to say that he was speaking for both of them and that he wanted to tell a story about his father-in-law’s last day. It was a day when they had a scheduled doctor’s visit, even as his father-in law was failing and approaching his death. As they waited for the doctor, the normal sense of finality and uncertainty permeated the room. Then the doctor entered and asked his father-in-law how he was doing today. His answer? “Outstanding Doctor!” Really? I mean how can someone in hospice care look beyond all the personal issues and answer with that answer? The words echo humility and character beyond comprehension. He died later that day. Here was a man, sick and dying and when asked how he was feeling he had only one answer. Outstanding. It was never about himself for this humble man, it was about everyone around him. I am grateful that I met a similar man when I was a young store manager in the wine business about twenty years ago. He was my senior by at least 40 years. Every time I heard someone ask him how he was he answered something along the lines of, “Outstanding, thank you for asking.” I have adopted that line as part of my regular schtick for many years now. I can only hope that at some point I can use it with the same meaning and dignity as it was used in this case when the response was, “Outstanding Doctor.” Minus the doctor part perhaps. I am inspired to continue the lesson. Today I truly feel outstanding!

About Jim Herbert

I've been wanting to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I'm hitting my stride. I'm also a budding speech writer. I've recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest. Check out our website at www.emergingintojoy.com for more details about the amazing things that are happening in my life. A book or two are nearing completion. With another Paris trip on tap for Easter of 2015 I can only imagine that there are Infinite Possibilities on the horizon!!!
