I mostly try to stay in a positive mindset as the holidays approach. Even in a year where I am finding it a challenge to feel super “Christmasy” I am generally upbeat and try to remember the philosophy of “spreading joy”. Tonight that mentality was challenged to the extreme.
After work I decided to squeeze in a haircut, make a few shopping stops and still try to make a 5:45 yoga class at the studio on Roosevelt Road near my apartment. With about 10 minutes to spare I headed from the loop to the studio heading south on Des Plaines Avenue. The shipping station for UPS is in the South Loop at 16th and Canal so there are often a bunch of trucks heading in the same direction as I was heading about this time. As I turned left off of Des Plaines onto Roosevelt a UPS truck cut me off and started honking and flashing his lights at me. Now I’m pretty mellow in terms of road rage. Surprising but true! Ask my girlfriend who is mega “A” type road rage expert, most things just don’t bother me. This one did. After a substantial amount of coaxing by flashing lights and horn sounds I got out of my SUV (really bad idea I admit) and told the driver that I wasn’t about to be bullied by someone who clearly made an illegal turn and had attitude to boot. Now I understand that this poor guy is likely very overworked this time of year and probably trying to rush home to a family dinner, but something about him yelling at me “you’re a dumbass” seemed a bit over the top. I yelled back “You’re in a company truck with a number on it and you are getting in my face, and I’m the one who is a dumbass?”
Of course I never called UPS and I don’t even care to do so mostly because I made it to 5:45 yoga class and at the end of that I wished I never got out of my truck in the first place. Lesson learned!
Tis the Season! Merry Eve of the Eve of the Eve…
