Nothing. Actually I’m writing in my blog but beyond that I’m doing nothing. I have no immediate agenda. That might not seem like that big a deal to many people but for me it’s gigantic rarity. I am sitting on my couch. I am eating an English muffin covered in Smart Balance peanut butter and Keweenaw Peninsula triple berry jam. I am drinking Lipton tea from a mug with my name on it that is actually my Dad’s old mug since we share the same first name. I am surfing through other people’s blogs just for fun. It’s quite literally the first time I have stopped and done “nothing” for a whole hour since New Year’s Day. Really… I mean it. As my girl and my close friends will tell you, Jim has two speeds. Full on and full off.
One of my things that I am working on for 2012 is to get better at finding time for “low idle”. I actually am rather enjoying myself right now in my hour of doing almost nothing. I should be doing my taxes, I could be cleaning the apartment or finishing some laundry; I’m resisting the temptation to pull out a pad of paper and make my list of things to do, but that can all wait until after my hour of doing nothing. Mind you I make time to meditate somewhat regularly, I take a yoga class almost daily and I sleep like a rock for about six hours a day, but to me all of those things are part of my schedule. Well, here’s to living life outside “the schedule” even if for only an hour. One small step at a time.
I’m about to end my hour of doing nothing and go say goodbye to one of my favorite yoga teachers. Her name is Eliza Wendt and she is moving to San Diego. I have been taking classes on and off with her for about two years. Today is her last class in Chicago and it is a Level 3 advanced class for 75 minutes. It’s my favorite style and favorite length of class. I suspect there will be over 100 people there. I’m quite sure it will be an amazing experience.
So I’ve been up for two hours and I’m already working on two of my biggest things for 2012. Slowing down and letting go. Looks like it’s going to be a productive day in a completely different way….
