To wrap or not to wrap?

In my random thoughts for the day file I present you this useless piece of information. I almost never use plastic food wrap or as we called it in my youth, Saran wrap. I have no idea why. It seems like it’s a fairly cost effective way to keep food fresh. I think I may have developed an aversion to it after all those years in the wine and cheese shops where daily wars with giant sheets of plastic film were the subject of many a nightmare. These days I use those fancy zipper seal plastic baggies for almost everything I have to store. They cost way more than food wrap for sure, but they are convenient and I don’t have to mess with that crappy plastic serrated edge to try to cut the wrap. Remember when they used to have real metal cutting edges that actually worked on those boxes before we became paranoid about injuries and litigation.  I do. In fact that’s why I’m thinking about this totally random thought in this moment.

Today after lunch I went to put away a half an avocado and realized I didn’t have one single plastic bag of any size in the cottage. In fact the only thing I had was the very last little piece of Meijer brand plastic food wrap from a roll that came with the crappy old kitchen of the cottage almost 12 years ago. Who knows how long it had been there before that? It actually has a metal cutting edge. Amazing we didn’t all die from plastic wrap injuries in the old days, eh? Well I guess I’ll toss out this empty box now, but not without a little nostalgic thought. Or maybe I should just save the box and put a roll from a new plastic food wrap in there? But then I’d probably cut myself on the metal edge and have nobody to blame or sue. Decisions, decisions? And if you think this is the last you’ll hear about this avocado just wait until you see where it turns up next…

About Jim Herbert

I've been wanting to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I'm hitting my stride. I'm also a budding speech writer. I've recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest. Check out our website at for more details about the amazing things that are happening in my life. A book or two are nearing completion. With another Paris trip on tap for Easter of 2015 I can only imagine that there are Infinite Possibilities on the horizon!!!
