I’ve been through this drill dozens of times. The re-entry into your everyday life from a glorious and mind numbing vacation. Mind you my everyday life is far from a burden, but it still requires some transition to go from fantasy play land to the routine. I made it through my first day back at work with no major issues. I met for a few minutes between our shifts with CJ to help counsel her through her own re-entry and we co-miserated about going from 24/7 together to ships that pass in the night again. That situation will be temporary for sure but it is still a part of our path in life right now. I’m not sure if time together makes the time apart harder or if time apart makes the time together more precious. Probably a little bit of both.

I didn’t turn on the TV or the radio at all tonight. I sat in silence and read the book I started on vacation called The Litigators by John Grisham. That guy can weave an amazing tale still even if the writing is a little bit less than epic. Who am I to judge a guy with over 20 #1 bestsellers though. I remember reading The Firm in the old days and being completely mesmerized. In fact I probably read it on a Jamaica vacation. Funny how some things stay the same even in the midst of change.

Time to turn in and get ready for day two of re-entry. I’ve got 20 pages to go in the book, just enough to finish before I fall asleep in time to get enough rest for my 18 hour day. Nice thing about continuing a book into the re-entry is that I can take my mind back into the story and for an instant I don’t know if I’m in my own bed or on a chair on Negril beach. Sweet dreams I’m thinking and ideas for stories…

About Jim Herbert

I've been wanting to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I'm hitting my stride. I'm also a budding speech writer. I've recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest. Check out our website at for more details about the amazing things that are happening in my life. A book or two are nearing completion. With another Paris trip on tap for Easter of 2015 I can only imagine that there are Infinite Possibilities on the horizon!!!
