Strangely Sentimental…

0After 15 years of service I’m about to drive my 1998 Toyota 4-Runner up to the dealership tomorrow and likely will not drive it home. She has almost 190,000 miles of service on her and I am so lucky for that long history. I bought her when I was in my mid 30’s and will let go in my late 40’s. It has been, as they say, a very good ride!

Of course I’m a bit sentimental. That is my way. I traded in my Nissan Pathfinder so many years ago and signed on to a long tenure of payments for the Toyota which will likely go down as one of my best decisions ever since I have driven this girl for 8 years without payments. I can only hope to be so lucky this time around.

Time will tell you that it is good to enjoy the reliable parts of your past while at the same time be willing to open up your energy to the future. That is where I’m at right now. I emptied out the old papers, sports equipment, garbage, umbrellas, clothes and the like from my old girl tonight. I shared a glass of wine with her and then I got ready for a new day tomorrow. I am happy for the memories and excited about the new. A Microcosm of life perhaps? I think so…

More to tell I’m sure. For now it’s off to bed and sweet dreams of the past and the future. The mysteries in life are exciting and scary. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

About Jim Herbert

I've been wanting to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I'm hitting my stride. I'm also a budding speech writer. I've recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest. Check out our website at for more details about the amazing things that are happening in my life. A book or two are nearing completion. With another Paris trip on tap for Easter of 2015 I can only imagine that there are Infinite Possibilities on the horizon!!!
